Set on England’s most easterly inhabited island, this ever‑popular estuary‑facing bar and restaurant used the Coronavirus lockdowns to its advantage, undertaking a stunning yet sympathetic renovation led by its long‑serving owners. The expansion extended the restaurant upwards, sideways, and outwards, transforming both the building and its surroundings.

Externally, the renovation focused on re‑purposing a previously unused area in front of the building to create additional outdoor dining space—essential for the substantial increase in visitors from spring through to autumn. KT Garden Spaces was entrusted with installing Millboard composite decking across three levels, designed with accessibility in mind and chosen to complement the restaurant’s internal refurbishment.

Millboard was selected for several key reasons:

• Its innovative composite construction, offering the authentic look and feel of real wood
• A durable aluminium subframe suited to coastal conditions
• Excellent slip resistance
• A colour palette that included Smoked Oak, perfectly matching the restaurant’s new weatherboarding
• Matching fascia boards ideal for screening
• Millboard’s strong track record in commercial and hospitality settings

In addition to the decking, KT Garden Spaces created matching screening at ground level and on the new balcony area. This provided an excellent opportunity to incorporate bench‑style seating, also crafted from Millboard materials. To complete the project, a semi‑frameless glass balustrade—built to commercial specification—was installed to shelter patrons from the island’s characteristic sea breezes. The balcony screening was carefully designed to act as both a sound barrier and a privacy feature for neighbouring properties.

A further highlight of Millboard’s versatility was the ability to inlay discreet LED strip lighting directly into the decking boards. This added a beautiful nighttime ambience while providing subtle, practical safety lighting.

Overall, the transformation of this much‑loved establishment is remarkable. Local residents and returning seasonal visitors are delighted that it retains its charm and reputation while offering a refreshed, modern experience. For KT Garden Spaces, this project was both a challenge and a pleasure—made even more special by being right on our doorstep.
